Nicole Baker

My ideal client population includes individuals across all life stages living with developmental disorders and learning disabilities who also experience anxiety and depression. I believe counseling is a partnership between the client and counselor with both of us working together to develop systems that allow the client to emphasize and use their natural strengths. During sessions we will address any emotions the client is experiencing related to their symptoms and will also develop any coping skills necessary to aid client growth.

In order to develop these skills I tend to take a behavioral approach mostly using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as some influences from Gestalt therapy. The specific interventions I use will look different from client to client, but generally in my work with children and pre-teens I tend to use more expressive therapies such as play and art, and with teens and adults I predominantly use classical talk therapy.

At the start of our therapy process I will spend some time getting to know you and we will work together to develop language and definitions that suit you best. For example I will ask you why you decided to begin therapy and to explain your symptoms. You will frequently hear me ask you to explain something to me as though I’ve never experienced it, even if it’s as mundane as happiness or sadness. In the moment the questions might seem silly, but it is all in an effort to understand your subjective worldview and experiences as fully as I can. I’m so excited to meet you and to see what the future has in store.
